An interdisciplinary group of students of the UdK Berlin and the TU Berlin planned, designed, and constructed a small PlusEnergy living unit as part of the international competition Solar Decathlon Europe (SDE) 2014 in Versailles (France). In accordance with the theme of the competition “urban densification”, it was conceived to be able to be placed on the roof of a pre-existing building. “Team Rooftop” won 4th place overall and 3rd place in the “Architecture” competition.
The research building was reconstructed in 2017 on the campus of the UdK in Berlin-Charlottenburg (Location: Einsteinufer 43-53, 10587 Berlin). It is now being used by both the UdK Berlin and the TU Berlin for research and teaching. Various aspects of building operation (indoor climate, building technology, energy balance, occupant behavior) are being monitored long-term. The building currently serves as a living laboratory for the development and testing of Smart-Building Technologies, the examination of occupant behavior, and the development of algorithms for efficient building energy management (for more details see http://solar-rooftop.de).
