Date/Time
September 17, 2024 - September 18, 2024 All Day
A collaboration between the Berlin Open Lab and the Object, Space, Agency research group of the Matters of Activity Cluster of Excellence, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
Organized by: Michelle Christensen, Florian Conradi, Anna Kubelík and Claudia Blümle / BOL Team: Ines Weigand, Selenay Kiray, Sidar Torunlo
An immersive two-day workshop that integrates practical hands-on experimentation with historical and theoretical exploration. This workshop addresses the significant ecological issue posed by the example of bark beetles, whose populations have increased due to the repercussions of climate change, resulting in extensive forest demise globally.
Participants will engage in the complete process of wood-printing and printing wood with both ancient analog techniques as well as DIY digital tools, using beetle-infested wood as a starting point. This workshop aims to explore several critical questions: Are bark beetles simply a destructive force in our forests, or can their infestation be interpreted through an artistic lens? Is the material inhabited and used as breeding ground by the bark-beetle truly wasteful or less valuable than non-infected wood? Do bark beetles possess an inherent right to their habitat, prompting a reconsideration of human and non-human cohabitation within ecosystems?
